Latest Council Meeting

May 21, 2009:  Executive Director Jane Kusiak began the meeting with a brief update on Council activities, recent enhancements to Virginia Performs, and examples of Productivity Improvement Fund impacts. To illustrate agency efforts to "move the meter" on performance, DMV detailed their methods for recasting agency operations via major technical improvements and a strategic focus on customers and products. The Commonwealth's Special Advisor for Children's Services summarized how localities have harnessed data to improve foster care outcomes.

In addition, the Council continued its discussions on improving educational attainment across the state. The National Center for Higher Education Management Systems presented their Student Flow Model for Virginia to help policymakers identify education pipeline improvements that will yield the greatest results. There was extensive discussion about challenges and opportunities to improve higher education retention rates, particularly at two-year colleges.

Recent Meetings

November 24, 2008:  The Council met in the Capitol's House Room 3, covering a range of diverse topics, including current trends and findings from Virginia Performs.  A discussion of selected outcomes included high school graduation, infant mortality and land preservation.

The centerpiece of the Council meeting was on educational attainment in the U.S. and in the Commonwealth. Although we currently rank very high nationally for the number of residents with bachelor's degrees and higher, Virginia faces the same serious challenges shared by all 50 states in the coming years:  Vastly increased global competition, lagging achievement by adults under 45, and disproportionate racial and geographic disparities.

January 10, 2008:  The Council met in the newly renovated Capitol to discuss its 2007 accomplishments and plans for 2008. Key 2007 accomplishments included developing clear alignments between agency performance measures and budget data with longer-term goals on Virginia Performs, as well as new productivity improvement projects. In 2008 the Council will launch an in-depth study of the core factors affecting both high school and post-secondary outcomes.
